Collection: Wood engravings "Silent Streets"
Night silence, loneliness and city scenes
Up close, you see a tangle of abstract lines, a chaotic amalgamation of shapes and patterns that together form the complex structures of a city. But when you step back, the image reveals a nighttime cityscape, deserted and silent, with only one figure caught in a moment of introspection.
The “Silent Streets” collection exudes a sense of loneliness and displacement. It raises questions about our connection to the world around us, especially in times of uncertainty and silence. The nocturnal atmosphere, enhanced by the empty streets and lack of human interaction, invites us to reflect on isolation and our place in an ever-changing world.
With these works I play with the tension between abstraction and realism, between detail and overview. The line structures invite the viewer to come closer and discover the chaos of the patterns, while the distance reveals the bigger picture: an intriguing balance between the digital and the tangible, between desolation and introspection. "Silent Streets" is an invitation to stand still and look at what surrounds us from different perspectives.

Would you like to have a portrait made?
Are you looking for a unique and personal work of art? I make exclusive wood engravings based on a photo.
If necessary, I can work with a professional photographer to provide a perfect photo as a starting point.
With these custom portraits you not only add a beautiful work of art to your interior, but also a unique piece of yourself. Ideal as a personal gift or as a lasting memory.
How do I make my engravings?
The merging of art and technology has always been a source of debate. Think of the introduction of photography in the 19th century and later the rise of generative art via computers.
With this series of wood engravings I combine technologies at different levels: from AI, 3D software and generative algorithms to machine processing and old-fashioned manual work.
-
Digital creation
The journey begins with digital creation. Depending on the collection, I use artificial intelligence or 3D software to create highly realistic images. With AI, portraits of non-existent people are created, purely based on detailed descriptions. For cityscapes, I use 3D compositions that are carefully constructed in software for creating virtual worlds. Both processes are as fascinating as they are strange, with technology laying the foundation for artworks that evoke emotion and meaning.
-
Generative code
I then use my generative code to convert the photos into vector drawings. Mathematical algorithms and tricks translate the complex details of the human face into an intriguing labyrinth of lines and curves. Due to the generative code, each portrait is unique in its interplay of lines, even if the same portrait photo is used.
-
Laser engraving
After this digital creation it is time for a physical manifestation. My self-built laser machine engraves the lines with precision in black wood. But due to the contrast of black on black, the interplay of lines is barely visible.
-
Applying oil paint
The final step: inspired by old masters, I mix linseed oil and pigment powders into an oil paint with the right consistency. This is manually applied to the engraved lines, making them visible and creating depth, color and texture. The result is reminiscent of an engraving in black granite, where the grooves form a play of contrast and texture against the black wood.
