Line drawing

Linea is my own code that turns an image into lines. It is written in JavaScript and WebGL. The source can be anything: a photo I took, an image from an AI model, or a scene I built in a game engine.

The source: an AI-generated portrait

The code translates the image into a dense network of lines. The density of the lines follows the brightness of the image, and their direction loosely follows the brightness and color gradients. I tune the parameters by hand until the drawing works. Every run gives a different drawing, even from the same source.

The line drawing in my software

Up close you see a jumble of lines, like spaghetti or knots. From a distance, or with your eyes half closed, the image appears.

The drawing is an SVG, so it can be printed, plotted or engraved at any size. The wood engravings start from these drawings.
