"When the lights go out" is a woodcut from the collection Silent Streets , which captures deserted cityscapes, enveloped in a nocturnal atmosphere and loneliness. Each work depicts a single figure, lost in the emptiness of the city, caught in a moment of introspection and isolation.
The Silent Streets collection reflects a time of uncertainty and gloom, raising questions about human connection and our relationship to the world when everything around us seems to have come to a standstill.
Technique and Details
For each work, a composition is created with Unreal Engine, a software package for developing 3D games. This composition is translated into a detailed line drawing by our own software. The lines are then laser-engraved into wood and filled in by hand with oil paint.
This combination of wood engraving and oil paint creates a unique effect: up close, a tangle of abstract lines and patterns unfolds, while from a distance the shapes merge into a photorealistic image. The technique plays with the tension between detail and overview, between the digital and the tangible, and invites you to view the work from different perspectives. This enriches the experience and brings new layers of meaning to light each time.
Edition
This work is part of a limited and numbered edition of 10 pieces. Each copy is finished by hand, which makes each work unique.
I make the wood engravings by cutting very fine lines in wood with a self-built laser cutting machine. Then I make an oil paint of various pigments and linseed oil. This is applied manually in the lines, washed several times and reapplied. This gives you a work that is a particularly refined play of lines up close, and a realistic portrait from a distance.
